3 Important Skills for IT Consultants

HIT

While your technical skills will be the foundation of a successful information technology career, those aren’t the only skills you need to become an IT consultant. Consulting can be a great opportunity to work on varied projects, in different companies and environments, and make a great salary. But, you need these important skills to succeed:

1. Communication Skills

As an IT consultant, you may be jumping into a team that has already been working together for some time. Or, you may be heading up a brand new team to work on a specific project. Your colleagues will need clear direction on their roles in a project and your employer will want to know that projects are moving along on time and budget. Whatever the situation, you’ll need to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with everyone you’re working with. Be sure that you’re able to communicate clearly verbally and in writing so that nothing slips through the cracks.

2. Attention to Detail

Health information technology projects can include a lot of moving pieces, often involving sensitive data and information. Attention to detail is crucial for executing an HIT project with no issues. As a consultant, you’re often being brought it to help a project get off the ground or wrap up, so it’s important that you keep a close eye on the details and make sure everything goes smoothly.

3. Problem Solving Skills

If you’re an information technology consultant, you’ve probably seen your fair share of glitches, issues, and confusing moments pop up in the midst of a project you’re working on. Problem solving and analytic skills will serve you well as you troubleshoot what might be going wrong and come up with a plan to fix it. HIT consultants are often there to help save money and make sure a project gets completed correctly, so don’t plan to wait for orders from someone else – be ready to show initiative and solve the problem yourself.
