Steps to Finding the Perfect Healthcare IT Position

It’s time to find the perfect healthcare IT position to fit your professional and personal goals. If you have the desire to migrate your IT expertise to the healthcare industry, or if you have been stuck in a dead-end position, find your ideal job match with the following three steps.

1. Keep Up With Professional Development

With advancements in healthcare technology occurring daily, it is imperative that professionals in medical IT jobs continually renew certifications and stay up to date with these changes. Whether you’re taking on contract IT jobs or more permanent healthcare IT positions, to remain a relevant specialist you should always seek opportunities to learn more.

Professional development isn’t a task to check off once a year. With rapidly evolving technology and ever-changing processes in the healthcare industry, the more data and training you can access the better your professional brand becomes. Set a time each month to research local conferences and seminars. Review resources like the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) for online courses, certifications, and assessments. Also, don’t forget to use social media channels to build your network.

2. Call Your Recruiter

If networking isn’t your strong suit, consider the benefits of working with a healthcare IT recruiter to discover new career opportunities. Medical staffing agencies that specialize in seeking and filling healthcare IT positions will have access to attractive opportunities that aren’t being widely shared. It pays to know the right people, and having an established healthcare IT recruiter on your side will open your job search to a network of healthcare facilities you may have missed.

As with many information technology positions, medical IT jobs can be identified by several names. A quality recruiter will understand the industry and your credentials and can pinpoint available positions by your qualifications instead of job title searches. Having a recruiter working for you means spending less time searching for job listings and more time interviewing for great jobs.

3. Update Your Resume Regularly

Even if you are comfortable in your current position, you should take time every few months to review and refresh your resume. Your responsibilities in an IT position can ebb and flow, allowing you to modify your resume with new hard and soft skills. Have you been introduced to a new team that you now collaborate with? Have you acquired more tools and resources that should be highlighted? Have you gained new data on how your role and responsibilities have impacted the company?

Make sure that you are prepared for your next position when your recruiter calls by breaking up your resume into smaller goals. Look at the verbs you are using to describe tasks and revise bullets to better convey your work history. Are any of your responsibilities and accomplishments measurable? If so, rewrite them with numbers. Remove older job experience and summarize to keep resume length shorter. Consider your resume a living document that evolves with your experience, so make time to revise it regularly.
