How to Continue Your Education While Travel Nursing

Your education as a travel nurse doesn’t stop once you’ve finished school. In fact, any career in nursing is coupled with a lifelong learning process that requires you to stay abreast of new and emerging industry changes and techniques.

Here’s everything you need to know to remain ahead of the curve while travel nursing.

Continuing Education and Travel Nursing 101

What are Continuing Education Units and why is Continuing Education important?

  • The Board of Nursing (BON) in most states requires Continuing Education (CE) to renew your license. CE can come in the form of courses (online or in-person), training for a new certification, or a learning activity on a specific practice.
  • Each course, certification, or activity that you complete is worth a certain number of “credits.” These are referred to as Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Typically, states require nurses to complete between 10-25 CEUs every two to three years to maintain their nursing license. To determine what the requirements are for the states you plan on traveling to, click here.

Why Accreditation Matters

Not all Continuing Education courses, certifications, and activities are created equal! When looking for a CE provider, make sure that they are accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

The ANCC has established rigorous requirements for CE providers to follow to ensure that they are providing nurses with quality learning material that is both evidence-based and free from commercial bias.

CE providers that are not accredited haven’t gone through the comprehensive application process or met the standards upheld by the ANCC. As a result, the majority of BONs will view the CEUs you earn from these providers as invalid.
